Dakota High School is located in Macomb, MI, and is part of the Chippewa Valley School District. It opened in 1995 and its choirs have since earned top honors and recognition throughout the state of Michigan. They have performed with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Opera House Orchestra, the Detroit Chamber Winds, the Warren Symphony Orchestra, the Macomb Symphony Orchestra and have sung in concert with Josh Groban and the Barenaked Ladies.
Members of the choir have been selected to perform in the Michigan All-State Honors Choirs. In December 2005, the Varsity Choir performed the World Premiere of Glenn McClure’s Caribbean Christmas Mass with the WSO. In Spring 2009, the DHS Varsity Choir was ranked in the Top 12 in the state and performed at 2009 MYAF (Michigan Youth Arts Festival) recital. In April 2012, a 44 person traveling choir performed in the New Amsterdam Theatre, the oldest theater on Broadway in New York City. The Dakota Varsity Choirs were chosen to perform a World Premiere of Dr. Stuart Scott’s choral and orchestral creation, “Rejoice!” for Christmas 2012. In Spring 2013, the Men’s Chamber Singers scored highest at the East Site for State Solo & Ensemble and continued on to perform at the 2013 MYAF recital. In April 2014, members of the Dakota Choirs traveled to Oahu, Hawaii to represent the state of Michigan and perform at Pearl Harbor for the National Festival of the States. In 2014, the Mixed Varsity Choir performed at the Michigan American Choral Directors Association Fall Conference. In April 2016, a 68-member choir performed on the stage of the Broadway Theatre in NYC and received straight Superior ratings from the professional Broadway adjudicators. Also in Spring 2016, the Mixed Varsity Chamber Singers were ranked in the top ensembles in the state and performed at the 2016 MYAF recital.
In Fall 2017, Alexander Walker accepted the position of Choir Director at Dakota High School -- the third person to have held that title.
In Spring 2018, Mixed Varsity Choir scored 89/90 points and Women's Varsity Choir earned a perfect 90/90 points at MSVMA State Choral Festival.
In Spring 2019, all four of Dakota's Choirs earned scores qualifying them for State Choral Festival. At MSVMA State Choral Festival, all of Dakota's Choirs earned first-division ratings with phenomenal scores. Men's Chorus scored 81 points of 90; Treble Chorus earned 82 points of 90! Women's Varsity and Mixed Varsity both scored a perfect 90/90 and received rave reviews from all adjudicators!
